Christmas Christmas
The word Christmas comes from the words
Cristes maesse, or "Christ's Mass."
Christmas is the celebration of the birth of
Jesus for members of the Christian religion.
Most historians peg the first celebration of
Christmas to Rome in 336 A.D. Christmas is
sometimes shortened to Xmas.Christmas is both
a holiday and a holy day that celebrates the
birth of Jesus. In America it is one of the
biggest event of the year, and for members of
the Christian religions it is an important day
on the religious calendar. In most places around
the world, Christmas Day is celebrated on
December 25. It is preceded by Christmas Eve on
December 24, and in some countries is followed
by Boxing Day on December 26.
In Western culture, where the Christmas
holiday is characterised by the exchange of
gifts among friends and family members, some of
the gifts are attributed to a character called
Santa Claus (also known as Father Christmas,
Saint Nicholas or St. Nikolaus, Sinterklaas,
Kris Kringle, Joulupukki, Weihnachtsmann, Saint
Basil and Father Frost).
