Christmas Christmas

The word Christmas comes from the words Cristes maesse, or "Christ's Mass." Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus for members of the Christian religion. Most historians peg the first celebration of Christmas to Rome in 336 A.D. Christmas is sometimes shortened to Xmas.

Christmas is both a holiday and a holy day that celebrates the birth of Jesus. In America it is one of the biggest event of the year, and for members of the Christian religions it is an important day on the religious calendar. In most places around the world, Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. It is preceded by Christmas Eve on December 24, and in some countries is followed by Boxing Day on December 26.

In Western culture, where the Christmas holiday is characterised by the exchange of gifts among friends and family members, some of the gifts are attributed to a character called Santa Claus (also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas or St. Nikolaus, Sinterklaas, Kris Kringle, Joulupukki, Weihnachtsmann, Saint Basil and Father Frost).

Christmas trees

A Christmas tree is one of the mostchristmas trees and christmas decorations popular traditions associated with the celebration of Christmas. A Christmas tree is normally an evergreen coniferous tree that is brought into a home or used in the open, and is decorated with Christmas lights and colourful ornaments during the days around Christmas. An angel or star is often placed at the top of the tree.

Christmas decorations

It is usual to decorate both the tree and home at Christmas time. Ornaments, flowers cones, tinsel, coloured baubles and Christmas figures are just some  of the items used to decorate a Christmas tree and home ready for Christmas. Christmas decorations add to the festive feel and brightens up the home ready for the Christmas celebrations.

It is traditional to give loved ones and friends Christmas gifts at Christmas time.

Christmas lights

Christmas lights (also sometimes called fairy lights, twinkle lights) are strands of electric lights used to decorate homes, public and commercial buildings and Christmas trees during the Christmas season. Christmas lights come in a wonderful array of configurations and colours These are another form of Christmas decoration and people will usually use Christmas lights to decorate a Christmas tree and also their home to make it look festive.

Christmas cards

A Christmas card is a greeting card that is decorated in a manner that celebrates Christmas. Typical Christmas Card content ranges from truly Christian symbols such as Nativity scenes and the Star of Bethlehem to purely secular references, sometimes humorous, to seasonal weather or common Christmas time activities like shopping and partying. Christmas cards are exchanged during the Christmas season (around December 25) by many people (including non-Christians) in Western culture and in Asia.
